On a side note, I hate the new art design for demons that's been cropping up since the exodus of Kaneko. Everything is so cartoony. Its like what happened to all the cloths and sword in Final Fantasy after Sakaguchi left.

Washington Compost most likely has a Westernized interpretation of Metaphor's politics. They probably assume that the game is talking about being in the middle of two polarized retards when actually both the main characters & the main villain are imperialists. The conflict of Metaphor is that they disagree with the methods used, but not the ideology.
I noticed that Westerners hardly ever know what they're talking about when it comes to politics.

Ghost in the Shell is the in-depth Japanese response to Neuromancer, with much of the franchise having a direct parallel. As basic examples, Motoko to Molly & Puppetmaster to Neuromancer/Wintermute, but the response goes to much deeper themes like gender & intrapersonal growth in countries where such things are punished.

However, the original manga was thick with USA style right-wing libertarianism & Copaganda (which is an infamous multinational problem with a sad history that needs to be confronted or it would fundamentally conflict with the progressive values core to the Cyberpunk genre) so the Mamoru Oshii directed film updated the franchise to better reflect reality & reduce how much the franchise supports right-wing violence.

I hope that made sense.

If you enjoyed GitS 1995 then you should check-out the movies "Patlabor 2" & "Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade", both worked on by Mamoru Oshii & also counterpoint right-wing politics.

Am I the only person in the Western world who truly understands what GITS is even about? They live in a completely dystopian society where even our protagonists are slaves to the system, because they can't afford to maintain their cyborg bodies without the aid & funding that they receive from their government wetwork operations. That's what Section 9 is, they're a front for what they actually are, an anti-terrorist cyber crimes division.

Especially back in the 80s when it was written, I don't recall any 1980s Right Wing Americans who were okay with a Bisexual Female-Identifying gender-unknown like Motoko Kusanagi. It's the manga that shows her having virtual intercourse with two women, not the movie. In both the manga & season 1 SAC, they joke around about how no one really knows what her gender is, and it's suspected that she just picks the body of a random Russian (Or any Eastern Euro, I forget what specific ethnicity her body is supposed to be.) Escort because she likes being female. Now sure 2nd Gig makes it clear that she is born a woman and Arise has the best origin story where she died in the womb or was stillborn so the only thing that ever was human about Motoko was her mind to begin with.

Reduce right wing violence? The movie is even more violent than the manga or tv show and most of the kills
are committed by Section 9 killing the dissidents. I don't recall ever seeing any moralization around it other than the admittance that they hate their jobs but they can't survive without their jobs which is at the center of Motoko's moral conflict and why it ends when she became a part of the internet.

GITS is one of the only IPs I know of where you can actually label it as Fascist, and I'd mostly agree with you. It's technically not fascist though because GITS is anti-Corporation but Pro Military. That's why 4 world wars were fought, and it's the same scenario that would happen in real life if our Corpos tried to fully take over the government instead of what we currently have where corpos simply take over the entire administration but leave the potus seat open to be influenced by their own admin that they appointed. (It's kinda like how Monarchs technically still have the power to declare rule & govern but every single one of them chooses not to, because they all know that they'll immediately be executed by their own government.)

What is that supposed to mean? Both the manga & the movie depict the life of being a weapon for the government as being complete shit. The main difference between the manga & the movie is that the movie is extremely Gnostic while GITS manga didn't really bother with that until Man Machine Interface where you could make the argument that it's talking about either gnosticism or buddhism. The manga is also funny while the movie has this dour, grim dark mood to it that Americans love so much. I don't understand why Americans love to be depressed all the time. They even brag about
how depressed they are all over social media.

Cyberpunk isn't even that deep, outside of Ghost in the Shell itself but it's precisely due to how GITS shows a different perspective (the perspective of The Establishment) reflecting that there are no good guys at all.
Cyberpunk as a genre is just shallow posturing, but it looks cool because the aesthetics pays tribute to film noir.
Both GITS & Cyberpunk are making the argument that Capitalism is bad (GITS 2nd Gig labels the Japanese people as "Complacent Consumers" and the entire franchise is structured around how we create our own mental prisons through the monetization of our vices that is fueled by highly advanced tech.), but Gits goes the extra mile and tells you that Commies are shit too. It's this exact problem that I have with Westerners, they love to adopt mindsets that their political leaders & cultural establishment have chosen for them, not realizing that they're in a false binary. Hobson's choice is not a choice at all.
That's why GITS stuck with me, because in the manga and the movie, Motoko merged with the puppet master and became a new life form. She didn't stay on the perceived path of her own self-assured destruction that the government has laid out for her.


It's kinda like how this forum calls me a Lefty or a Communist because they don't really understand the militarized Japanese mindset where we view ourselves as being surrounded by enemies. (I don't know where people get this idea that Japan is friends with Russia because Japan is in deep red Russia's "Hostile Countries" list & vice versa)

What could you possibly be playing? It was mostly nothing but shit this year. I did see you playing Fantasian which
is a game that I'm interested in but I can't find it anywhere. I waited a month for Romancing Saga 2 to go on sale for the holidays but then I randomly decided that I just want to buy a PS3 (I'd go with Ps2 but I can't find a place that sells ps2s.) and a shit ton of games because modern gaming is going to go full internet soon (just like Motoko) and we'll eventually own nothing. Corpos can dictate the prices on us, and our very own access to the products that we digitally rented when we no longer have leverage with physically owned products. We won't even be able to download roms in peace because our Digital AI assistants will eventually rats us out to Nintendo or anyone else who cares to police the law.
Sega is getting in on it too. They just delisted most of their genesis games that they plan to resell through an always online digital streaming service.
