Reddit, a website I have never posted on, is a solid 30/40.
There is an ongoing redirection of anti-Reddit energy that I would like to draw attention to.
The characterisation of Reddit's worst as tasteless, vasectomy-getting, expert-trusting, sadistic crybullies is fair enough. We have all seen Soyjak, we have all seen photographs of Soyjak.
Increasingly a host of qualities that I would associate with a serious or ascendant life seem to be under attack, laundered through this area of memery.
I will do my best to explain how I think this has come about.
You may remember this type of thing. Obviously much of the internet and mainstream culture in general is still dedicated to ostracizing and shaming noncompliant or low-status men in this same way. You will occasionally still run into people, normally people of a certain age, who don't think of Reddit as soy at all but rather as some sort of PUA/Brony/Atheist mansplainer hotbed. This seems to be the current normie view also. I think there are traces of this remaining in all criticism of Reddit.
Abridged history of the Bugman meme.
Feel free to correct me on the following.
Originally, the full name of this meme was "Small-souled Bugman" and it originated on conservadad SA-offshoot MPC.
It referred to men who cultivated self-esteem, identity and a sense of their own life through consumerism, in particular the "artisanal manhood" of single malt whiskey, cigars, menswear, riding motorcycles, barbershops, chopping firewood and so on. The definition broadened quite rapidly and then finally left the bounds of the forum. Something that I found amusing at the time was how those adopting the meme on Twitter had missed the point entirely. Guys would talk about how different they were to the Soylent guzzling bicyclists, contrasting their own drinking and transport habits.
The original meaning was very useful indeed and it's a tragedy that a succinct way of referring to it was lost.
Bugman now is basically like a synonym for wimp, urbanite, soy, etc. and also "nerd" which brings me to my main point.
Anti-Reddit/"Bugman" memes now often amount to chastising men for showing an above-average level of attention detail to things that provide no social or political benefits to those doing the chastising or their favoured groups.
A selection of things you are supposed to consider cringe and Reddit at present:
Following the rules of a website.
Disliking loud music in public.
Spartan dwelling and diet.
Calling the authorities.
Regimented habits.
Atheism.
The Reddit type at it's most extreme does represent the dissection and taxonomy of human life, following a worldview which sees traditions, customs, and religions as nuisances standing in the way of progress. We see this in the form of "data-driven" cataloging and analysis of consumer products because this is what's allowed, but in history these have been great men.

5 years ago, when we'd originally come across the MPC thread another friend of ours and I archived many posts from it (PH51 always delivers):
MPCdot wrote:When I think of buggmen I always think of libertarians first. They want nothing more from life than to indulge their consumerist appetites, gorge themselves on pot and junk food, and transform everyone else into a soulless econobot for "MUH GDP".

MPCdot wrote:"small-souled bugman" implies that the person has been cut off from their cultural roots, and totally subsumed into consumerist neoliberal hive. they are totally lack any sort of sympathy for their ancestors folkways, higher spirituality, or passion. if they do engage in activities that are somewhat human, they still are heavily tinged by global capitalism. if they are a sportsfan, they will participate heavily in fantasy sports(which is obsessed with statistics, 'scientific' analysis of performance). if they exercise, it will be all cardio, and tracked by fitbit and then uploaded to faceberg. tastes in food, art, music, movies are predetermined by review aggregator sites like yelp, metacritic or rotten tomatoes. political views only appeal to them if they seem 'rational,' and derived from the sort of conventional wisdom, economics influenced worldview seen in works like 'moneyball', nate silver's 538 blog, and 'freakonomics.'
One of the better definitions (but what the fuck is up with perfect grammar and no capital letters? goons are such faggots), although in typical weak-willed republican fashion they're unwilling to admit that any "sport" which does not feature live murder (at minimum, we should be on to weaponry implants now) is grotesque degeneration.
MPCdot wrote:more characteristics of bugmen: probably works in a fortune 500 corporate environment, at least has bachelors from decent flagship university, is the type of person that would buy amazon echo and still use it after a month, talks regularly about netflix and prestige cable shows like game of thrones to 'break the ice,' member of at least one subscription service like blue apron or birchbox, has strong opinions on craft beer. they engage in artisanal manhood where masculinity is defined by consumer choices(only SINGLE BLEND scotch whiskey, cigars, vintage safety razors.) think of obama on the few occasions when he would 'present masculine'(e.g. when he would go on ESPN to banter with sportscenter hosts about his march madness bracket.) an impenetrable milquetoast f****t who is totally empty once you remove the sum-total of his consumer choices, social signalling. petraeus and kushner are solid entries.
MPCdot wrote:Turk's definition is really good, it gets at the avaricious pursuit of metrics and the limited, sterile ambition of achievement for its own sake...you wonder if the bugman gives himself evaluations (in lieu of soul-searching) and agrees with himself that he "exceeds expectations" and "surpasses goals"
"Avaricious pursuit of metrics" is one I could've remembered without getting all this outta the vault.
MPCdot wrote:To BA's question, I would assume bugmen don't start out that way. The bugman state is the post-metamorphosis state of a goon or faggotstriver. So their station is owed to either just being persistent and the person who showed up, or having the skillset only an obsessive person can develop. - "faggotstriver" is a term they used pre-bugmen, I believe, basically to take overachiever and turn it into even more of an insult.
MPCdot wrote:i agree with this. craven striver types are far more susceptible to 'morph.' the bugman lacks roots or spirituality, so he looks to the neoliberal cathedral to define is mores and consumer preferences. he finds cosmic justice in the corporate skinner box, where employees are encouraged to take on mortgages, CC debt so they are motivated to meet sales goals and performance targets.
what separates the bugman from the pack is that he is totally in simpatico with this system, and doesn't seem conscious of how out of balance it is. he is elevated in society because of his clearly defined utility curve and transparent motivations, which make him easy to manage, predict, and control. the managerial class desperately wants to believe every situation in society can be brought to heel by a mckinsey consulting model, and they are excited by people who fit into their molds.
The idea that "obsessive = bad" is typical goon conformist faggotry, but otherwise this is one of the more solid definitions which highlights "faggotstriver" as the proto-SSB three generations back from the simplified "bugman" which has become so misused.
MPCdot wrote:Someone quoting Huxley: “The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be most normal. Many of them are normal because they are so well adjusted to our mode of existence, because their human voice has been silenced so early in their lives, that they do not even struggle or suffer or develop symptoms as the neurotic does. They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relation to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to that abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they were fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted.”
MPCdot wrote:I think that might help explain how these people come to be. It's an adult extension of adolescent adherence to garbage culture -- that is, garbage both in terms of cultural artifacts and cultural values. These people don't realize, unfortunately, that something's wrong; they assume instead that what they need is more garbage culture. And that's exactly what they get, in the form of consumerist fetishes and neoliberal inanities. It really is sad (no, it's sad!) because how else are average people supposed to realize that the hegemonic assumptions of our culture are in fact the problem? Certainly their normie parents won't tell them; certainly they've done everything right according to the tenets of the culture. And yet at the end of the day they come home from work and no matter what they do they are still bugmen.

The Enlightened man is 'rational, understanding and cooperative' - in a word, compliant. Untroubled by a feeling of inner dignity, in him persists no remnant of ancient human feeling to bristle against the degradations of modern life. After all, he signed the contract - he has only himself to blame! He never draws a line, he never gets sick of it all, he has never 'had enough'. He accepts the fine print.
MPCdot wrote:The Redditor is a white male aged 14-40. He is a moderate liberal, deeply atheist, and generally works in a STEM field or some shitty low level job like waitstaff or cubicle monkey. This person has spent his whole life defining himself by what he consumes, so of course he's going to browse the ultimate media consumption platform on the internet - Reddit, which is simply a link aggregator with a voting system and a comment section. The submission title and comments section tells him what to think, and the voting system tells him what opinions are popular so he knows what to believe and say. He has produced little of value in his life. While there are plenty of people that browse Reddit to kill time on the bus or in between classes and all that (I am one of those people - I block a s**t ton of subs to make it worthwhile), there is a very distinct type of person on the site that basically just sits and looks at memes all day. One example is the whole culture surrounding /r/Me_irl, various meta-reddits, and so forth. That distinct type of person is the Redditor, capital "R".
If the Redditor has hobbies, they are defined by purchasing and consuming products rather than creating something. A person who woodworks almost definitely doesn't post about it on Reddit - they are usually pretty well-adjusted people who picked it up on their own, took a shop class, or was introduced to it by a friend or family member. They may post on a web 1.0 woodworking forum like this one. The same goes for electronics hobbyists, gearheads, and so on.
What is a Reddit hobby, then? The best example is collecting mechanical keyboards. I cannot for the life of me understand these people. They literally spend thousands of dollars on keyboards. I can even understand why Black people blow $4,000 on a subwoofer for their jalopi, but why do you need to spend over $200 on a keyboard? This is a secret for those with advanced tastes finely sculpted by months of quietly observing Reddit karma counts, such as the bugman. Another example is the fountain pen sub, the male fashion advice sub (the advice is in the sidebar, the posts are mostly city dwelling nu-males discussing Uniqlo button downs), and to some extent the audiophile sub. Redditors also love Tesla automobiles far more than the luxury cars offered by traditional automakers like BMW, Audi, Acura, Lexus, etc., mostly because they don't know much about traditional cars in the first place and Teslas are more or less glorified appliances to begin with. This isn't unique to Redditors though, an important litmus test of a Small Souled Bugman is their opinion on Teslas. If they gush over them while also criticizing traditional luxury carmakers, you've got a Grade A+ Bugman on your hands.
There is also the usual suspects for shows Reddit obsesses over - the most legendary of which is Rick and Morty, which I haven't gotten around to watching yet primarily because of how incredibly annoying the fans of the show are on Reddit. I see RP as trying to turn bugman into a descriptor for a mindless media consuming drone who mindlessly repeats all the Right Opinions and consumes all the Right Products. The Bugman fundamentally lacks creativity and has virtually no impressive skills because of all the time they waste consuming. They are the happy Beta Pluses in Brave New World, consuming their soma and fitting right in with the other bugmen.
MPCdot wrote:For perspective /r/woodworking does exist, so woodworkers do post about what they made on reddit. But the reason they probably use it because they find web 1.0 to inconvenient to use. Which brings me to my main point: The convenience of reddit and other web 2.0 sites allowed bugmen to obsess over materialism unlike anything web 1.0 would. The closest thing I found to a web 1.0 version of /r/MechanicalKeyboards is https://deskthority.net/. Even then deskthority is more focused on old IBM keyboards rather than obsessing on the best way to burn $300 on Overwatch keyboards.
Convenience leads to materialism and vanity. This is why I enjoy browsing mpc, it reminds of a time where you actually had to struggle to get stuff done, and there was less distracting/addictive content too. If we had it my way I would make all smartphones disappear and everyone reverts back to using 1990s IBM computers. I'm totally up for browsing mpc that way too.
How I loathe the conservatard's nostalgia for "working hard".
Sorry to break it to this slaveborn faggot, but Eternal September was an improvement:
Fucking bald luddite faggot, I'm supposed to wanna go back to Usenet instead of this?
"DUH why can't the internet be more like a BOOK??"
Here's a detail- y'know why goons like the original Fallout's so much? BECAUSE IT'S A FUCKING BOOK.
Goons don't like visually exciting things (discounting SA's /b/prototype FYAD but they willfully renounced that ontop of Lowtax shitting it up to protect "trans rights") because they're logocentric retards, additionally, this's also the root of "trooning" where you live through definitions of reality and as such the "words" can be replaced or rearranged because "the truth" doesn't exist outside of writing about it.
This is the same reason games made by goons always look like shit- the term "programmer graphics" might as well be about goons exclusively.

Still a puzzle why no one brought up "EDC":
As far as I'm aware "Everyday Carry" descended from police and military culture (though I only heard people using this term as far back as the early or mid 2010's) but was quickly absorbed by Redditors (like this shitlib faggot) who quickly sought to take out the main component of it- guns:
But my immediate thought then and now was "why has no one brought up how gay modern gun culture is?"
The problem with both of these people (and anyone of this type) is they're trying to masculinize and camouflage "collecting".
There is "nothing wrong" with collecting things (we can debate the extremely feminine nature of becoming sentimental over objects, hoarding for a nest, and obsessing over dead things), but "EDC" culture goes the extra step to where it becomes worth noting the transformation.
As such, there's an insignificant difference between the faggot collecting pocketknives and handguns to the first faggot.
I don't think badly of men (even last men) who want to collect knives and guns because they like weaponry (normal):
But in contrast I find 56%er gun collectors..
..to be identical to the "Funko dungeon" types:
Though to this faggot's credit, he does have some of the original "Burbank" Funko shit- the Tarantino-esq cereal mascots and Hanna-Barbera shit housed in faux-vintage TV cases, the original Funko mascot..

MPCdot wrote:An important fact about bugmen: the "small souled" part is really the part that determining takes some thought. You might hear "bugman" and just think any simpleton is one . That misses the "small souled" part of it. For example a fearless wild beast (like a wolf or a lion) is dumber than any person so you might think of a person is a small souled bugman the animal is. But the small souled part comes from: the bugman just floats along, does office bitchwork, gets told what to do .... the beast eats/sleeps/f**ks when it wants, fights, kills, sometimes is itself killed (eg gored by the horn of an animal its attacking) ... this is the opposite of small souled
So also, often criminals are not bugmen even tho they might have no cash , be locked up, etc
There were arguments within the original thread of people criticizing many for dropping "small-souled", none of which are archived but this post does outline the importance of it.

Meow-Ludo practices "kitchen table" polyamory (where everyone involved in the mess is involved with each other, as opposed to a collection of separate individual relationships). He allows his many partners access to his Google Calendar so they can all make time for him.
Meow-Ludo Disco Gamma Meow-Meow (this is his legal name) is a candidate for the Science Party. He ran in the federal election in 2016 in the seat of Grayndler in inner Sydney. Why the name? Well Meow-Ludo was a "name agnostic". He decided on the change because "it would be a really interesting experience to change your name because not many people have that experience". The name Meow-Ludo Disco Gamma Meow-Meow came from a brainstorming session with friends (clearly conducted over the internet) with the goal of finding names that "rolled off the tongue the nicest".
Meow-Ludo entered politics because of the absence of "facts" in political discourse, which he found personally distressing. Proudly declaring his confidence that science and technology can and will solve all problems, he threw himself headfirst into the "democratisation of science" and the formation of a "network of internationally connected biohackers". His Science party is "radical centrist" - a party dedicated to SCIENCE! and only SCIENCE! in formulating policy. Decisions are only to be made on the evidence and recommendations of experts.

It's hard to know whether this is a new silicon valley paraphilia or a misguided philosophical endeavour: The founder of Sirius XM satellite radio, Martine Rothblatt now heads up a drug company that makes life-saving medicines for rare diseases (including one drug that saved her own daughter's life). This is the real world but it takes place in the Wachowski's fever dreams. And I'm certain for all the lofty humanism proclaimed by these people, there's gonna be just as much butt play involved too.
A lot of John Gray's best writing has been on the use of technology for the purpose of cheating death and he has a pretty decent article on trans-humanism here in the form of a book review. A quote on, cryogenics, which Grey sees as an earlier form of trans-humanism:
I asked these techno-futurists to consider the events of the past hundred years or so – a devastating civil war and two world wars, a ruinous stock-market crash and the Great Depression, for example. Given this history, how could they be confident that their refrigerated cadavers would remain intact for another century?
MPCdot wrote:I started looking this stuff up and this is maybe a new bugman subspecies:
The Quantified Self, also known as lifelogging, is a movement to incorporate technology into data acquisition on aspects of a person's daily life in terms of inputs (food consumed, quality of surrounding air), states (mood, arousal, blood oxygen levels), and performance, whether mental or physical. In short, quantified self is self-knowledge through self-tracking with technology.
Grinders are people who apply the hacker ethic to improve their own bodies with do-it-yourself cybernetic devices. Many grinders identify with the biopunk movement, open-source transhumanism, and techno-progressivism.[1][2][3] The Grinder movement is strongly associated with the body modification movement and practices actual implantation of cybernetic devices in organic bodies as a method of working towards transhumanism
The idea that these movements will go further and have people installing electronic devices into their own bodies is pretty hilarious, but what I find most disturbing is this desire to track and monitor every aspect of their live, how could one ever be truly efficient without a correct reading of the amount you've sweated today.
MPCdot wrote:This is an important feature worth pausing on.
Bugmen do not treat hobbies like normal people. Normal people have a hobby because they enjoy doing something, or it's a good way to pass the time, or they're just good at it. I like to lift and learn poems by heart, Mom likes to bead necklaces, Dad likes to play word games. In this sense you probably have dozens of minor hobbies, little activities you enjoy to pass time living. This is just a normal part of being alive. Bugmen, by contrast, treat hobbies as shallow extensions of their identity. They use hobbies as substitutes for the interesting features of a personality that they lack. So you get dating profiles headlined "24 F, trans-humanist, avid soap collector and food blender". The hobby gets front billing as a "quirky", "random" detail about themselves to show how special they are. I wouldn't introduce myself as a weightlifter -- it's just something I do, it isn't my identity. When I had to stop lifting I didn't become a different person. But for bugmen the hobby is the identity. Their identity is nothing more than the sum of the things they do.
I think this is because this is how their whole lives are lived. To the bugman in my dating profile, "24 F" is just as transient and arbitrary a description as "avid soap collector". If she feels like a man, presto chango, tada! It's gone. At this point I hear old man PMAN whispering in my ear about how this is caused by a lack of social identity. I think that's right. A real identity is expressed and formed around other people. A bugman's identity is formed by however they happen to spend their time. It's really just an accident of fate, you could have become an "air freshener aficionado" or a "small drone enthusiast". It's perfect for a nihilistic worldview where nothing means anything beyond randomly-clanging atoms and pleasure-seeking morality.
I think this is a fair characterization because it's so common. They all have some random hobby. Plus, like you say, it's always some s**t nobody's ever heard of. This is actually the goal, because if their hobby was common it would mark them the same as everybody else, and then they wouldn't have a unique identity.
They didn't fully connect it here, but this is a perfect description of the "troon" phenomenon. "Troons" are not actually "trannies" they're furries and are exactly what he outlines here as someone who builds their identity around a "hobby". Whatever the actual "trans" population is (as in, people weird or retarded enough to do this shit without ZOG instructing them) it hasn't moved up or down a single person despite rapid onset trooning.
MPCdot wrote:I've noticed that bugmen are the sort of people who stress how important the distinction between pedophilia and ephebephilia is. They consider the distinction important because they still have a few shreds of humanity left in them, enough that they feel bad for masturbating to 13 year olds. This last shred is considered a flaw in the bugman, and it will be ironed out with time, for in the future there will be no need for them to make such a distinction.
This is an example of someone who did not understand this phenomenon even with the most accurate definition at hand. The small-souled bugman would firstly not be attracted to youth (and additionally, but more importantly, would not be attracted to something "against the rules") and secondly would not be (or allow themselves to be) attracted to something which was not a standard set by women.

“Lightning versus USB-C, the return of the Feature Phone, space tourism, and unlimited wireless data.”
The bugmen dreams of perfect cables and space.
“CGP Grey and Myke Hurley are both independent content creators. Each episode, they get together to discuss their working lives."
“Myke has started tracking his work time, Grey has started tracking all time, and they both talk about their themes for 2017.”
The bugman purchases an app that rates higher on the F-scale than him, and finds peace being bossed around by a piece of software.
“Disruption Hosted by Georgia Dow, Brianna Wu, Mikah Sargent and Steve Lubitz. Caution! Listening to this weekly show about technology and culture may cause the following symptoms: uncontrollable laughter, onset confusion, chronic empathy, and heightened awareness. Listen at your own risk!”
“We start discussing universal basic income to prepare for the day that the robots take over. (Hopefully Nintendo isn't supplying the hardware.)”
The bugmen of the 2010s dream of the techno-singularity like the bugmen of the 1950s dreamt of nuclear powered cars.
 An abo breaks the backup generator of an Australian bugmen VR farm trying to sniff petrol in 2047, and 2000 bugmen die in their soylent pods.
“Mac Power Users Hosted by Katie Floyd and David Sparks. Learn about getting the most from your Apple technology with focused topics and workflow guests. Creating Mac Power Users, one geek at a time since 2009.”
“This week David and Katie cover some big questions including the Workflow app, secure cloud storage, email sharing, moving data, managing your network, and how they scan. Also, we learn that under no circumstances will David get access to Katie's Synology.”
Risque innuendo joke aside, bugmen tend to have Their Own Synology Setup. Their home NAS is treated like a pet.
“Russell has a shiny Galaxy S8 he won't stop talking about. Andy is living life in 360 degrees now. Huyen is empathetic towards Todd and Tina. We also dig into why Google is burning books and blocking ads.”
Bugmen and Google go hand in hand. They embrace the Orwellian Giant Company thinking it's still hacky-rebel-cool. It's probably based on the disruption theory. Uber is another example, no matter how giant that company got, the bugmen kept cheering for the destruction of working class taxi drivers.
You will tend to see plastic Android idols on the desk of Google-worshipping bugmen. These very people hated Microsoft in the 1990s, even though that company was nowhere near as omnipotent as Google is today. Bill Gates was not soulless enough I guess.
MPCdot wrote:The Bugman seems related to the Normie. The Freak- tranny freak, Jew Freak, Law school professor freak- do not, IMO, qualify as bugmen because they have a Thing. Even if their identity is freakish and evil, it is still something believing to them.
A Normie is someone who doesn't see beyond the Veil of Lies-they often sense something is wrong, but they have no words for it. They often gravitate towards Trump the way people near a chasm in the dark will huddle together-on some subconscious level, they sense the danger, though they cannot say exactly what.
Normies exist in the flow of KikeShit that flows through the culture. They may rebel here and there- at a gay kiss in Beauty and the Beast, for example-but without a root understanding of the structure underlying it, they're easily cowed or silenced.
Bugmen swim in the KikeShit. It's not simply that they're liberals, it's that they have no existence outside the boobtube or other controlled identity structures (Use Amazon Fire and Netflix and listen to these bands from Columbias Indie Label, twentysomething hip kid!)
Normies tend to like KikeShit because thats all they get, but they prefer IPAs or Coors or whatever and will still like those things regardless of circumstance. A normie will order coors light at a hipster bar or an IPA at a truck stop.
A bugmans entire existence is defined by their surrounding circumstance. They are in tune with the KikeShit like a cockroach senses vibrations.
The bugman is typically not noticeably bad looking, weird, freakish. They don't have radically weird hobbies or portray themselves as tranny ceos.
The bugman is like a bug. It wiggled into its little rotting log and you'll never notice it until you dig.
A dancing spider may be gross, but it stands out, does its dance. A black beetle just burrows into the background and chews away.
Another one that drives by the real definition of "troon".
MPCdot wrote:I've redrafted this a lot, but basically, the reason bugmen whip out their flaccid microsouls at the sight of arcane tech garbage is because they have no meaningfully intimate relationships in their lives. People naturally play to be the big fish in a small pond, and for most people, that means something like being the first family member to go to college, or the family's only doctor, or the only guy in the frat who can buttchug absinthe, or whatever. SSBs bounce around three or four social reference frames (I'd love to make a thread about that concept) in which they've created no meaningful or lasting intimacy, and to combat insecurity (exacerbated by that vacuum of worthwhile relationships), they seek to be the very best in the whole world at something.
Of course, SSBs aren't enterprising, original, or patient, so their method of being the best at something takes a page from children's book, and they go out and find a niche with piss-poor competition, so that they can defend themselves from any real competition since "Well, I'm a master Paradigm-pivot Solutions Design Architecture Advocate for Functional programming in Virtual Reality, so it's fine that I can't get laid, since I'm not trying."
This is distinct from nerds, who use their obsession as a method of escaping real life altogether instead of trying to feebly play along with it, and it's this fine line that creates the separation between the two.
MPCdot wrote:The foodie aspect of a bugman's life is an important one to document. It's tied in with his passion for conspicuous consumption. Since he feels no intrinsic connection or passion for anything he does, he is forever on a desperate quest for social validation of his every act. So with his attitude to meals. He doesn’t just like food, he requires credit for liking the right kinds, and that from the right kinds of people. And he will post pictures of his meals on social media, expecting many likes. He has been cooking the food with Facebook in mind, and may even be contemplating how best to frame and photograph the meal in order to make it look the most appealing.
This is a warped display of narcissism which is even more f**ked up than the selfie, and foodie posts are analogous to selfies. Just as our social devolution has led people in social situations to think more about how they themselves will look in a photo than about capturing a memory of friends and family that can be cherished as a keepsake, in the same way some bugman cooks are at a point where they are thinking far less about feeding their families a delicious meal than they are about what kind of splash their chutney will make on Instagram.
When you go full artisanal in any area of your food or beverages, you’ve probably already gone full bugman in your soul.
MPCdot wrote:I get the impression that as soon as the technology for gene editing your baby becomes commercially available (god forbid such a day come), the bugman will immediately use it to craft the "perfect" child (preferably in an artificial womb, for using human flesh is too inefficient).
The more tools they gain access to, the more inhuman and bugmannish they can build their child until it's literally sprouting antennae. No doubt that with all new and untested technologies they will end up with a whole host of horrible mental and physical health issues, but the bugman does not really care about whenever it happens or not. To the bugman, a human is an imperfect fleshy prison that actually needs, and even craves "improvement". "Useless" organs like tonsils and appendices are to be removed. The mind itself can be improved by science, and soon enough we will escape that which binds us to our "primitive" human forms.
The goal? A human that does not act human, but rationally and with all but few of its drives removed. Everything in the peripheral vision is to be torn away, petty emotions that distract you are to be rid of in their entirety. The human will have their impulses reduced to a single driving force "to move forwards", "to progress", "to improve" until the day they are skittering around like bugs, solely devoted to little more than increasing the total sum of utility until the heat death of the universe.
Another one for the "missed the fucking point" pile.
Of course, I understand his point- that dysgenic people given control of gene editing would desire to advance dysgenics. But he quickly contradicts himself by his own definition- that the "bugman" would be "soulless" to think of the human body as an imperfect prison (true) and that only a lesser person could desire to change this (false).
Were a "return to Eden" possible by material conditions, it would be through eugenics.
The conservatard fears this as much as the libtard, because they are the same.

The answer to both questions is "a lot," and it irritates me. His having bugface puts it over the top. Technology used to move more obviously towards a telos that made sense in the context of the human community. Today, the "new one" isn't a sui generis like the hydroelectic dam or the polio vaccine or the microprocessor or even the refrigerated railcar, instead, it's simply a newer, sleeker version of an already extant consumer good that has more features (or, in this case, a different power source). MPCdot wrote:Some long thoughts on bugmen:
A bugman is a man who has made technocratic progress into his religion.
The holiness he seeks is modernity and “being smart.” His religious authorities are the credentialed. His sacred texts are studies and data. He is the Pharisee of the Information Age. Like the Pharisees, he worries about satisfying authorities by following rules without any regard for higher truth.
Psychologically, the bugman is driven by two aims: a desire to measure up according to some standard and an abiding fear that that standard might be traditionally masculine. His prissy rule-following is a means of deflecting attention from his personal shortcomings.
Bugmen avoid confrontation and seek to be non-controversial. This is frequently misunderstood on MPC, but the bugman adores data precisely because it gives him an authority figure to tell him what is right and what is wrong and to allow him to avoid taking a stand. (He hates taking stands.)
If he is religious, his religion is purposefully vague and he repeats the empty cant that all religions are basically alike. If he is non-religious he will reassure people that he does “see the purpose” of religion in society, which in his mind is using churches to host AA meetings.
Politically he identifies as a “moderate” and adjusts his opinions to reflect the median opinion of his circle of friends. He unquestioningly accepts the dominant world view of his time and contents himself with fretting over the “how to” problems. In any case, he is mostly interested in whether ideas—he calls them “solutions”—have been backed by authority figures with graduate degrees from prestigious universities.
His hobbies involve no exertion, passion, or risk. He exercises as a weight maintenance tool. He may read fiction or nonfiction, but he rarely reads anything written more than twenty years ago.
For the bugman, being a consumer is a hobby in and of itself. He likes having nice things, he likes talking about nice things. He will spend an afternoon “researching” high-end sweatshirts or artisanal whiskey or whatever catches his fancy. He likes to point out that many of the lovely things he has were not possible a generation ago. Truly we live in the best of all possible worlds.
He likes the idea of minimalism and thinks it would be doable if his minimal collection of possessions were high quality and “well curated.” Someday he hopes to be so successful at consumerism that he, too, can be a minimalist.
The bugman is a passive player in the decline of Western civilization. The hard Left is, at least in my view, driven by psychosexual hatred of Western civilization not unlike an Oedipus complex: they desire to kill the “father” (Western authority figures) and sexually conquer the “mother” (Western people and their culture). The bugman doesn’t feel any of this; he’s simply along for the ride.
MPCdot wrote:Bugmen react to the hollowness and alienation of the modern world by retreating to the solid-seeming world of data.
Bugwomen react to the hollowness and alienation of the modern world by retreating to the world of feelings. They believe that all the world's problems could be solved if everyone felt the right away about everything. The mark of a bugwoman on Facebook is that she posts a lot about her feelings on minorities and lectures other people about how they ought to feel about minorities. If she feels like getting her hands dirty, she will write down her deep (not really) thoughts on a piece of cardboard and walk around carrying it in public.
But here's what she won't do: she won't use her Saturday morning to clean up a playground where minority kids play. Or ever set foot in her local homeless shelter. (In fact, you can embarrass these people by asking them what their local shelter is named.)
Both the bugmen and women have replaced physical social interactions (the wisdom they impart) with abstractions. They believe that they are good people because they hold the right thoughts in their heads--they "believe in" the right things. Other people exist as characters in a movie about them. They can be reduced to impersonal data or objectified as the subject of correct feelings. But they are never fully human in their own right.
MPCdot wrote:It turns out that when I asked "What are bugwomen?" I really should have asked "Jane, what are bugwomen?" Men compete for status by hunting, women compete for status by gathering. That masculine hunting instinct gone awry is at the center of the bugman's perversions. ("Ancient men conquered cities... you go to wine bar with gf.") Gathering is a social and communal activity. Women are more emotional than men -- it might be nicer to say that women are more emotive than men. So in bugwomen I think there's a failure of normal social emotions. This means no longer grooming well (the yoga pants aesthetic TT posted perfectly describes several bugwomen I've known). It means seeking substitutes for well-kept relationships in cat herds and instagram fantasies. It means abandoning all work for the good of the tribe and collapsing into solipsistic life. It's the "Eat, Pray, Love" world of Netflix binging and Chinese takeout and frumpy comediennes.
However, there is one thought I'd like to drill down on:
“Bugmen react to the hollowness and alienation of the modern world by retreating to the solid-seeming world of data.”
I don't think bugmen are consumed with data per se. The obsession with data is just one part of their aesthetic. Bugmen have plenty of other affectations that aren't motivated by optimizing numbers in excel. It strikes me that data is measurement about the world. That is, data isn't about understanding reality itself, it's about describing reality. I think that's a key distinction. Bugmen don't interact with the world, they interact with a description of the world. I think this carries through to every symptom we've discussed. They're not interested in food for its own sake but for its attributes, for its nutrients (soylent) or its ethnic character. They pour over data and min-max their own lives because they've forgotten what life is really about. It really is insect-like.
The benefit of this definition is that I think it carries over to women. Bugwomen aren't interested in photos because they record precious memories but because they produce pictures that can be described and shared. Bugwomen like yoga because it fetishizes breathing and relaxing -- things normal people just do. Repeat for any essential bugman or bugwoman feature. In all of them you'll find insects confusing a description of reality for reality itself.
Fantastic highlights of w*man's natural logocentrism.

Atheism.

it is an obvious aspect of masculinity to want to collect anything.
However, a hobbyist with a few guns but no knives doesn't come anywhere near the same category of fetishism as a person with a collection of knives but no guns.
To try and further justify this position: some hobbies are for the woman, as mentioned above.
However, when women buy guns for self defense, they are presented with the choice of two other hobbies for women to choose from: golf and knitting.
There is nothing sexual about either of those hobbies and they certainly are not exclusive to women.
i think she's got one, because the guys, they got a bit too big and she has breasts too but it's kind of fun. It's the ladies who make this up and the females who make it up at the same time.
If someone is a virgin, they might be forced to commit sex with men. If someone is a sex offender, this is a very rare thing indeed.
Most men, especially men, have been raised by a system that punishes those who don't conform. In BDSM we've seen some pretty big success stories.
Sex with someone who is in need of it isn't a normal part of it. In addition to the usual "make it easier for them to do so" and "take more pride" statements, it is encouraged, because that is what BDSM does. That is your right and responsibility, and it means if it's your fault, then why don't you want to help them instead? It isn't a problem, or a problem of your own doing, but that's the way it works. Some men have been forced into playing with a partner who is in need of love and fulfillment, or who just wants to make friends. They have no control over it. In the BDSM community, we love what we do and don't do, because that's the world we live in, and we want to make friends, or be involved in the community, and to have a great time.
If anything, the BDSM community has a lot more of this.
Many men and women have experienced rape and sexual violence
Where most of BDSM participants will readily tell you that their primary interest in the activity is the transference of power, fetishists will most often not
