The USA is very strongly the progressive of the West. So they have an authoritarian government, which is by its nature totalitarian. But they do not let that keep them from having a democratic culture. Most Western democracies have a fairly robust open society and freedom of speech and freedom of the press and all that stuff. And I think part of the explanation for why people are so angered at Trump is that he has spoken out in such an authoritarian and divisive way about our enemies in this country.
The thing about Islamophobia is that it does exist, but it is also being used as an attack on American democratic norms. And we just haven't really had a civil war here, and we don't know if one is coming.
I think, politically, the main impact of Trump's election on my life is that I feel much less confident now than I did in August about being able to speak publicly on campus. I feel much less confident about being able to do public research and public commentary. But the dangers of that are so urgent, that I think we have to have a kind of obsession with them, otherwise it'll be all over.
