I was waiting for this game for a long time as it's directed by Keiichiro Toyama (known for the first Silent Hill game on PS1, the Forbidden Sires series on PS2 & PS3, and Gravity Rush series on Vita & PS4) after he left Sony together with some colleagues. The game obviously has a pretty low budget, and might be considered "janky" due to how unpolished and rough it is. Yet I think it has a lot of heart and soul put to it. And I believe it will provide an unique experience and will be a pretty enjoyable title who enjoy weird, unusual stuff. Also supposedly it will touch upon interesting themes in its storytelling.

From interviews, main source of inspirations are Parasyte, Gantz and Tokyo Ghoul, but also movies by Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai like Chungking Express or Fallen Angels.

So how's the replay value? I played the demo on PS5 (which is only the tutorial, but the game looks nuts. Too bad the longplays look boring. The final boss is disappointing. I was expecting some crazy ass Forbidden Siren shit.) and I was shocked that it was basically a counter attack-based (or Sekiro for babies) Souls-like where you jump between bodies kinda like Aya Brea's The Turd Birthday lol. I thought it was just going to be another gay ass survival horror game where all you do is run away like a fucking bitch. How the fuck is that even fun? Survival Horror games don't even have special mechanics for running like Death Stranding does. Kojima is a gaming god though who understands that gameplay is paramount. It's just too bad that his stories usually get in the way with only MGS1 having a good ratio of gameplay between story.

It's awesome how you have to use humans as expendable meat bags by guiding them all to fight these horrid monstrosities who look like they stepped straight out of Berserk. At least Aya Brea mostly stuck to taking over the bodies of military combatants & police. In SlitterHead you're playing as random out of shape fat balding Chinks, defenseless women and old ass people. It's hilarious because they even move around as a bunch of unhealthy losers. It made me realize, most people in the world are unheatlhy like these characters which is something you rarely ever see in games because in gaming we generally expect to play as a healthy individual who can actually run & jump.

In real life it's called remote viewing and it functions exactly like how the Siren games present it. You're looking through the eyes of something from beyond this waking world. I haven't beaten it yet, so I can't tell you about replay value. I'm not expecting much in the way of replay value, though for the reason I'm about to get into.

So far, its decent. Its very linear, though, or perhaps I should say "scripted" in how you have to progress. Its very narrative driven and the gameplay sort of follows. There is some degree of exploration, but its more so for finding the path you are supposed to be on than learning about the world. The creators very much wants you to play in the exact way they want for any given area.

When you try to stray off the beaten path, it punishes you for it assuming it doesn't just snap you back to where it wants you to be. There was one part where I had just beat some soldiers and was supposed to run ahead a new area to stop some more. I was low on health from the previous fight, so I tried to run back a few feet to absorb the blood from the enemies I killed. It wouldn't let me even though it was right there and there was no reason why I shouldn't be able to run back a few feet to reach it. Overall, the game is good, though.

You basically have the random Chinese people and then special unique characters that are more capable and have special abilities that you can find. Most of the story is told through and around them.

I can definitely tell that the writers are all Japanese because a lot of the nuances of the plot and character rationale are "shounen manga-ish" in some areas. Its kind of like with Shenmue 2 where you're supposed to be in China but the characters views, rationale and behavior don't feel remotely Chinese. Most of the unique characters personality are typical Japanese trope personalities like the badass pretty boy that acts like everything a bother and he doesn't really care, or the apathetic whore. One of you're main stable characters is a straight up mixed prostitute. Her special abilities is to essentially make people simp for her.

I woudn't call the combat souls-like per se. It reminds me more of Zelda's parry systems from Skyward Sword and BOTW. You have to parry at the exact moment an attack lands to deflect it like in BOTW, but you have to do it in the correct direction like Skyward Sword. Outside of that, its battles are a DPS check. There is some strategy to switch at the right times, though as well as "builds" for some of the unique characters. Some are more offense oriented while others are more support.

In regards to replay value I'm asking about how deep are the combat mechanics & enemy encounters? (I'm an oldschool arcade guy from the 80s, that's what replay value referred to back in that era.)
I don't care about the story changing during replays or any of that, but I do like it when games add in more costumes, extra weapons, etc. after you beat a game like how classic Silent Hill & Resident Evil used to do it. Hell Parasite Eve 2 has near endless replay value due to all of the extra modes you unlock and you unlocked even more after successive playthroughs. I doubt any one does that in the modern era now. Shit in RE 4 you need to play for dlc just to play Separate Ways. Fuck that, that asian voice actress can't act worth shit and completely takes me out of the game every time she speaks. Unlike Infinite Wealth, you can't just leave the dialogue in Japanese so I'd never have to hear Yongyea's monotone fresh off boat illegal immigrant voice ever again. (Shoulda got me to be Kiryu. Two of my most replayed games of all time are both action games, Streets of Rage 2 & Resident Evil 4 (the real re4, not the disappointing remake where the enemies seem to be magnetically stuck to you lol.)
What makes those two so replayable is how the combat forces you to confront & interact with the game no matter what decision you make

From the combat I've seen, it seems to be some kind of weird Monster Hunter loop which I'm not a fan of due to how damage spongy MH battles are (especially in post game.) but Slitterhead has so many other unique elements going on that it feels as though it were deep enough to where you can create your own challenge runs.

Now obviously the combat isn't going to be anywhere near as polished as Streets of Rage or classic RE4 but it did seem as though it had a chain of systems that you can seamlessly interact with like how Cyberpunk 2077 and Breath of the Wild
aren't really action focused games but the systems that hold those games together have such a symbiotic harmony that half the fun is just the traversal & physics systems, and the fairly decent enemy ai who react to your interactions with the systems which create a constant feedback loop of engaging gameplay.

Now sure that's prob too much to expect from Slitterhead since it's not some multimillion triple AAAss project but from what little I've from the fighting in the tutorial demo, you could at least use the random humans as bait and sacrifice them to demons as you jump between humans like a game of musical chairs.

Replay value wouldn't matter to me so much but goddamn modern games take up way too much gb. (No wonder why I moved over to Switch, where even a 500 gb card can store over 100s of games and most of the physical games are entirely on the game card.)
On day 1 when I got a PS5 I filled up the entire 1tb hard drive with only 6 games. You need to make sure that at least 4 of those games are insanely replayable. It really sucks if you're into fighters though because all of them are over 100 gb, even King of Fighters XV. KOF XV without dlc is larger than Street Fighter 6 currently is with all of its dlc. I'm not sure why Kof takes up so much memory. I don't even question it with SF6 because it has stupid bullshit like the yakuza rpg mode taking up most of the space. SF6 also has ass jiggle lol, even Zangief not that I was looking he's just so huge that he covers up a lot of the screen. He was the first person I noticed that jiggled. Then I realized that even Cammy, Chun & Juri ass jiggle a lot too. Strangely SF6's Mai's tits barely jiggle but she still has her iconic KOF 96-98 ass jiggle lol.
I want the new Fatal Fury game but I don't know which fighter to delete since I like Kof XV more than SF6, but SF6 may eventually become the better game once all dlcs are oout.
Fuck the game I really want is Virtua Fighter 6 and that's another 100+ gb down the drain. It wouldn't be a problem if you could actually use external hard drives but they only allow you to play PS4 games through external hd.

I only bothered with PS5 because it was more affordable to me than a gayming PC is. (I really wanted to play Cyberpunk, Baldurs Gate 3, and Virtua Fighter 6. I only played Cyberpunk so far and it is damn good. Man it must've really sucked ass on the PS4 coz there's nothing wrong with it on PS5.)
For an actually decent gaming pc that plays modern PS5 games, you need to spend at least $1000.
For that amount of money, I'd rather just buy a new snakeskin or lambskin coat.

Animu tropes. I'm not referring to that at all, I did notice that but I also found it cringe and completely clashes with the deep horror terror feel that the intro sets up. It was hilarious that Julee just tanked getting killed, but then I was like ah man not another stoic Devil May Cry 2 Dante guy when Motorcycle man showed up.

I'm referring to how Silent Hill team's writing is mostly inspired by Japanese spiritualism and occult.
A lot of Jap games from the 90s were based off of the Sarin Gas Attacks, including Suda51's games.
Slittehead for example shares a lot of spiritual overlap with Final Fantasy 7, which itself was a game that was philosophically structured around gnosticism, but presented as Japanese style pantheism of eight million gods, although the words used in FF7 is mako energy or spirits of the dead.

Even the game Cyberpunk 2077 (well all cyberpunk really) shares a lot of spiritual overlap with Japanese belief systems
where the spirit is separate from the body, and the body is viewed as interchangeable but only the spirit is the real you.
That's the main conflict of Cyberpunk 2077, were it not for the Cyberpunk genre, 2077's plot would've read like a basic Japanese spiritual conflict for the sense of self.

Yeah it is far more like Skyward Sword, but a lot of Zelda fans view Dark Souls as an evolved form of Ocarina of Time's combat. Whateve rmatters not to me, I don't even like Zelda games.

Sorry I didn't check this place for a while.

While I indeed enjoyed and liked Slitterhead, I was a bit burnt out from it after finishing for the true ending, lol. As it had some annoying conditions for it (though they nerfed it a bit in later patch from what I know).

As for combat and encounters. In the beginning it feels more shallow, but becomes better and more interesting when you gain more playable characters and more skills to use. Also because you can use 2 characters for missions for the most part of game, you can combine which one you use so it also shakes things up a bit.

Also, important thing is crowd control. In this game, you often use it via abusing sould teleportation (as in, gain enemy attention to character, then when enemy goes for you teleport into someone else, etc.). For pedestrians on street which you can sacrifice there is even an action that catches enemy attention to them - which is handy when you need to recover health on you main character or charge some skill. There is a bit more to it, for example Alex has skill that sucks enemies into one place, which might do very good if you combine it with supercharged skill by him or other character. And that soul teleportation crowd control tricks becomes a must in end game fights. True last boss is kinda impossible without it (and it's pretty epic as it ends up some crazy dance, when you swap bodies each several seconds there, using crowd for openings to make a hit).

As for replayability, tbh idk. After finishing game, you have access to all (or almost all) mission to replay. There are some (not very important, mostly costumes and additional lore dialogues) unlockables, and I think it keeps track on your clear time or something. Perhaps if you like combat that much and want to spend more time with characters you didn't when doing a playthrough, then maybe.

how deep are the combat mechanics & enemy encounters?

As I said above, it becomes deeper and more exciting when you get more chars/abilities, though of course it never reaches the level of GH or NG. Though tbh I was surprised as I expected less in story-focused game. Common enemies, like in beatemups, are more "extra stress" factor, as boss/mini-boss are stars of the show. As game progresses, at first you battle just enemies and then just 1 boss, then you start getting mixture of common enemies and boss set-ups, then later you start getting 2 boss alike encounters too. Sometime after half of game the tension of battles also rises as it becomes more and more hectic and dynamic.

Some people hated how block/parry system works here though, as there 6 (or 8? i forgot) directions and... there are visual clues to attacks, but also you have to learn timing. Some enemy attacks might have slow startup, and some hit superfast. Usually there are audio clues too. You might play without relying much on parries though, if you prefer to sacrifice more health or you're good with invasion/soul teleport etc. But they are handy if you do stun of enemy to expose for some super.

Like I mentioned, it can be fun trying out various character choices for missions, for different weapons/abilities they have (btw I like how characters are designed that they have different playstyle. e.g. A. gives you tools for using crowd more, while E. is all about melee; some more attack-focused, others more defending or buff playstyle ones), including passive skills (which plays role when you consider one char being main and other more of a backup).

So yeah, I think it's pretty fun, and better than many... but also not as good but as something more specific. With bosses, there are 3 "ultimate" ones which have pretty nice multiphase setups. Meanwhile "normal" bosses usually have just two.

Oh, I forgot, on locations there are often hidden some "shrines" with bonus encounters, either boss-based or enemies-based but with different "rules", some of them were good to do (though most of clothing items they award you fucking sucks lol).
