Reddit, a website I have never posted on, is a solid 30/40.
There is an ongoing redirection of anti-Reddit energy that I would like to draw attention to.
The characterisation of Reddit's worst as tasteless, vasectomy-getting, expert-trusting, sadistic crybullies is fair enough. We have all seen Soyjak, we have all seen photographs of Soyjak.
Increasingly a host of qualities that I would associate with a serious or ascendant life seem to be under attack, laundered through this area of memery.
I will do my best to explain how I think this has come about.

You will occasionally still run into people, normally people of a certain age, who don't think of Reddit as soy at all but rather as some sort of PUA/Brony/Atheist mansplainer hotbed. This seems to be the current normie view also. I think there are traces of this remaining in all criticism of Reddit.

I think that might help explain how these people come to be. The Redditor is a white male aged 14-40. He is a moderate liberal, deeply atheist, and generally works in a STEM field or some shitty low level job like waitstaff or cubicle monkey. This person has spent his whole life defining himself by what he consumes, so of course he's going to browse the ultimate media consumption platform on the internet - Reddit, which is simply a link aggregator with a voting system and a comment section. The submission title and comments section tells him what to think, and the voting system tells him what opinions are popular so he knows what to believe and say. He has produced little of value in his life. While there are plenty of people that browse Reddit to kill time on the bus or in between classes and all that (I am one of those people - I block a s**t ton of subs to make it worthwhile), there is a very distinct type of person on the site that basically just sits and looks at memes all day. One example is the whole culture surrounding /r/Me_irl, various meta-reddits, and so forth. That distinct type of person is the Redditor, capital "R".
If the Redditor has hobbies, they are defined by purchasing and consuming products rather than creating something. A person who woodworks almost definitely doesn't post about it on Reddit - they are usually pretty well-adjusted people who picked it up on their own, took a shop class, or was introduced to it by a friend or family member. They may post on a web 1.0 woodworking forum like this one. The same goes for electronics hobbyists, gearheads, and so on.
What is a Reddit hobby, then? The best example is collecting mechanical keyboards. I cannot for the life of me understand these people. They literally spend thousands of dollars on keyboards. I can even understand why Black people blow $4,000 on a subwoofer for their jalopi, but why do you need to spend over $200 on a keyboard? This is a secret for those with advanced tastes finely sculpted by months of quietly observing Reddit karma counts, such as the bugman. Another example is the fountain pen sub, the male fashion advice sub (the advice is in the sidebar, the posts are mostly city dwelling nu-males discussing Uniqlo button downs), and to some extent the audiophile sub. Redditors also love Tesla automobiles far more than the luxury cars offered by traditional automakers like BMW, Audi, Acura, Lexus, etc., mostly because they don't know much about traditional cars in the first place and Teslas are more or less glorified appliances to begin with. This isn't unique to Redditors though, an important litmus test of a Small Souled Bugman is their opinion on Teslas. If they gush over them while also criticizing traditional luxury carmakers, you've got a Grade A+ Bugman on your hands.
There is also the usual suspects for shows Reddit obsesses over - the most legendary of which is Rick and Morty, which I haven't gotten around to watching yet primarily because of how incredibly annoying the fans of the show are on Reddit. I see RP as trying to turn bugman into a descriptor for a mindless media consuming drone who mindlessly repeats all the Right Opinions and consumes all the Right Products. The Bugman fundamentally lacks creativity and has virtually no impressive skills because of all the time they waste consuming. They are the happy Beta Pluses in Brave New World, consuming their soma and fitting right in with the other bugmen.

For perspective /r/woodworking does exist, so woodworkers do post about what they made on reddit. But the reason they probably use it because they find web 1.0 to inconvenient to use.
Which brings me to my main point: The convenience of reddit and other web 2.0 sites allowed bugmen to obsess over materialism unlike anything web 1.0 would. The closest thing I found to a web 1.0 version of /r/MechanicalKeyboards is https://deskthority.net/. Even then deskthority is more focused on old IBM keyboards rather than obsessing on the best way to burn $300 on Overwatch keyboards.
Convenience leads to materialism and vanity. This is why I enjoy browsing mpc, it reminds of a time where you actually had to struggle to get stuff done, and there was less distracting/addictive content too. If we had it my way I would make all smartphones disappear and everyone reverts back to using 1990s IBM computers. I'm totally up for browsing mpc that way too.

The idea that these movements will go further and have people installing electronic devices into their own bodies is pretty hilarious, but what I find most disturbing is this desire to track and monitor every aspect of their live, how could one ever be truly efficient without a correct reading of the amount you've sweated today.

This is an important feature worth pausing on.
Bugmen do not treat hobbies like normal people. Normal people have a hobby because they enjoy doing something, or it's a good way to pass the time, or they're just good at it. I like to lift and learn poems by heart, Mom likes to bead necklaces, Dad likes to play word games. In this sense you probably have dozens of minor hobbies, little activities you enjoy to pass time living. This is just a normal part of being alive. Bugmen, by contrast, treat hobbies as shallow extensions of their identity. They use hobbies as substitutes for the interesting features of a personality that they lack. So you get dating profiles headlined "24 F, trans-humanist, avid soap collector and food blender". The hobby gets front billing as a "quirky", "random" detail about themselves to show how special they are. I wouldn't introduce myself as a weightlifter -- it's just something I do, it isn't my identity. When I had to stop lifting I didn't become a different person. But for bugmen the hobby is the identity.
Their identity is nothing more than the sum of the things they do.
I think this is because this is how their whole lives are lived. To the bugman in my dating profile, "24 F" is just as transient and arbitrary a description as "avid soap collector". If she feels like a man, presto chango, tada! It's gone. At this point I hear old man PMAN whispering in my ear about how this is caused by a lack of social identity. I think that's right. A real identity is expressed and formed around other people. A bugman's identity is formed by however they happen to spend their time. It's really just an accident of fate, you could have become an "air freshener aficionado" or a "small drone enthusiast". It's perfect for a nihilistic worldview where nothing means anything beyond randomly-clanging atoms and pleasure-seeking morality.
I think this is a fair characterization because it's so common. They all have some random hobby. Plus, like you say, it's always some s**t nobody's ever heard of. This is actually the goal, because if their hobby was common it would mark them the same as everybody else, and then they wouldn't have a unique identity.

Some long thoughts on bugmen:

A bugman is a man who has made technocratic progress into his religion.

The holiness he seeks is modernity and “being smart.” His religious authorities are the credentialed. His sacred texts are studies and data. He is the Pharisee of the Information Age. Like the Pharisees, he worries about satisfying authorities by following rules without any regard for higher truth.

I don't think bugmen are consumed with data per se. The obsession with data is just one part of their aesthetic. That is, data isn't about understanding reality itself, it's about describing reality. I think that's a key distinction. Bugmen don't interact with the world, they interact with a description of the world. I think this carries through to every symptom we've discussed. They're not interested in food for its own sake but for its attributes, for its nutrients (soylent) or its ethnic character. They pour over data and min-max their own lives because they've forgotten what life is really about. It really is insect-like.

The benefit of this definition is that I think it carries over to women. Bugwomen aren't interested in photos because they record precious memories but because they produce pictures that can be described and shared.
